U.S. Steel Class Action
On May 12, 2023, a Pennsylvania court authorized six Mon Valley residents to sue U.S. Steel on behalf of 123,000 neighbors over pollution caused by the Christmas Eve 2018 fire at the Clairton Mill.
If you lived in one of the 22 Mon Valley communities shown in the map below, you may be in the class action.
On Christmas Eve of 2018, a catastrophic fire knocked out the pollution controls at U.S. Steel’s Clairton Plant. U.S. Steel continued production for months—even though it had no way to clean the sulfur out of its coke gas emissions.
Air pollution spiked in the Mon Valley and U.S. Steel’s neighbors suffered noxious odors, burning eyes, nose, and throat, difficulty breathing, headaches, and nausea.
Now the neighbors are fighting back in a class action lawsuit called Hernandez v. U.S. Steel.
